On a fine afternoon in Portsmouth HMS Westminster and HMS Richmond faced off against one another in a battle of two Type 23 Frigates, on a rare occasion when both ships were alongside at the same time.  Unfortunately due to a busy programme and commitment to upkeep and maintenance neither side were able to field more than 15 players so it was agreed to play a game of 10 a-side. Richmond kicked off and were soon putting the Westminster defence under pressure.  Westminster did get some relief with a couple of early penalties but were unable to secure their own lineout ball and Richmond eventually cut through to score, although they were made to work hard by some dogged defence.&...

As reigning champions, after beating the Royal Marines of 40 Commando in 2015, HMS Seahawk were out to avenge their defeat at the hands of Britannia Royal Naval College in 2014. Having secured a place in their sixth Navy Cup final in eight years the bookmakers odds must have been in the Naval Air Station's favour, but the youth of the officer cadets from Dartmouth, and their impressive results in the previous rounds of the competition, indicated that the spectators were in for an enjoyable match at The Rectory. Did you know that the RNRU facilitate a series of coaching, training and referee short courses in the Portsmouth, Plymouth and Weymouth areas?  The courses are open to all RNRU and other rugby club members and can be booked via the RFU website.  The full details of courses can be found on our website and if you require more information please contact ady.cherrington@rfu.com the RNRU Rugby Development Officer. The UKAF Rugby Football Club is looking for two willing volunteers to join their team in the roles of Secretary and Match Day Co-ordinator/Treasurer.  The UKAF RFC fields three representative XV sides (Men, Women and U23s), selected from the three single Service RFU constituent bodies (the Royal Navy Rugby Union, the Army Rugby Union and the Royal Air Force Rugby Union).  A number of fixtures are organised throughout the year and have recently included charity fund-raising Remembrance matches and an U23 fixture v Oxbridge on the same day as the Army v Navy match at Twickenham.  The terms of reference for each role can be found at the links Secretary   and Ma...

'Déjà Vu' in the Navy Cup Final

For those of you who can remember back to 2014, Britannia Royal Naval College were facing up to HMS Seahawk in the Navy Cup final.  Fast forward two years and the same two teams will meet again at the Rectory on Wednesday evening.  Back then it was BRNC who were victorious, and following a year's absence from the competition, are back in title contention.  HMS Seahawk, who have dominated the Navy Cup with 3 wins in the past 5 years, will be looking for revenge - and to retain their 2015 title.
