The Navy referees took the opportunity of the Combined Services Rugby Referees biannual dinner to present this season’s awards for Referee & Newcomer of the Year. The Admiral Royds Trophy for Referee of the Year was presented to Cdr Andy Coles. Andy has had an outstanding season refereeing both within Service rugby and in his home county society of Devon. As a newly promoted level 6 referee at the start of the season he has more than just consolidated within the grade, he has refereed at a consistently high level at this grade by taking on such games as the South African Defence Force. Royal Marines Win Akrotiri 10s

The Royal Marines team became the 2008 Akrotiri Floodlit 10s champions when they defeated the Royal Signals 31 - 17 in the final. The team was managed by C/Sgt Jan Hicklin and captained by Mne Rob Lloyd. Jan had assembled a good blend of experience and future talent to represent the Corps and the players clearly repaid the faith he had in them. In the pool stages the team recorded wins against Akrotiri Griffons (60 - 0), Episkipi Eagles (28 - 14), ICT Catterick (42 - 5), RAF Odiham (50 - 0), 25 Reg RLC (68 - 0) and Nicosia Barbarians (28 - 12). Royal Marines Select Strong Side for Akrotiri 10S

C/Sgt Jan Hicklin has selected a good blend of experience and youth in the Corps side for the upcoming Akrotiri 10s. Team captain, Rob Lloyd (42 Cdo RM), is joined by four other full capped players in Scott Llewellyn (Cdo Logs RM), Calum McCrae (Cdo Logs RM), Josh Drauniniu (CTCRM) and Gareth Evans (CTCRM); whilst the youth is provided by CS U23 caps Ben Tate (CTCRM), Ryan Wells (42 Cdo RM) and Loz Blackburn (45 Cdo RM). Navy Referees at Emerging Schools Tournament

Navy Referees along with their other service colleagues were on duty on the morning of the Army v RAF match at Staines RFC for the pool stages of Daily Express Emerging Schools Rugby Festival. This competition is the culmination of 2 rounds, county and regional, that the teams have to get through before arriving at the finals at Staines. The prize for winning their pool at the morning event is a final on the hallowed turf at Twickenham, these finalists need referees therefore there is a chance for the lucky few to officiate the finals. By Simon Mills, RFU Press Office Farlingaye stole the show at Twickenham today with a display of their try-scoring power in the finals of the Daily Express Emerging Schools Rugby Festival. The Woodbridge school ran in three in 10 minutes to seal victory over Chaucer Tech, from Canterbury, and capture the Under-12 New Schools title in front of 50,000 fans during the half-time interval of the annual Babcock Trophy Army v Navy game.
