Twickenham Distraction Weighs Heavy on Navy’s Final Run Out

The final Royal Navy run out before the Army Navy match has always been a much anticipated game that more often than not has fallen well short in terms of spectacle.  2015 was no different as a spirited Chichester side were sharp on the counter attack but ultimately lacked the fire power to damage the Navy’s defence.  With a high number of rolling substitutions punctuating a drawn out second half, the game fizzled out to a 22-13 victory that was far removed from the opening quarter’s inventive intensity.  The Royal Navy can now fully focus on their annual test against the Army but have an anxious wait to see whether Tom Cowley, who was injured early will be fit...

South West Invitational XV v Royal Navy Senior XV

The Royal Navy Senior XV travelled to Taunton for a fixture against a group of talented and clearly motivated young players who are undoubtedly on the rise.  On a beautiful, warm spring evening, Taunton RFC became the home for a South West select side, known as the Dirty Dog Invitational XV, with players selected from across the south west, including the Cornish Pirates, the Exeter Chiefs, Tiverton, North Petherton, Exeter University and some of Taunton's own Titans.  With the game played on a hard ground in perfect conditions for running rugby, from the kick off both teams set off with one aim - to play hard running "Barbarian" style rugby with minimum kicking from hand and te...

Navy Ring Changes for Tricky Taunton Trip

The Royal Navy make a number of changes for Wednesday’s game against a South West Select XV; as the whole squad looks to get the team in the right shape and frame of mind for the season defining game against the Army at Twickenham on 9th May. Only four of the players who started against the RAF are retained although two other starters are bench. With last season’s game played at a breath-taking tempo for the full eighty minutes the match should prove the perfect run out to put the RAF draw behind them and ensure that the traditional lightening starts of the Army Navy game do not catch them unawares. With Harry Collins and Kyle Mason both away on International duty with Mal...

Mariners Impressive Display Leaves Vultures in a Flap

The Royal Navy Mariners are clearly not an early morning team.  A sluggish start to the game, which kicked off at 10:30, allowed the Vultures to exert some pressure but as the sun rose in the sky and the muscles warmed through so the Mariners game lifted.  By then end of the match they were well in control and playing their best rugby of the season as they ran in five tries for a 39-15 victory in the opening round of the 2015 Inter Service Championship. It was the RAF Vultures who started the game better yet it was the Mariners who were first on the scoreboard.  Having absorbed some early pressure and watched two Vultures kicks at goal being pushed wide the Royal Navy M...

RAF Women Too Strong for Valiant Navy Side

The RAF Women gave what was probably their best ever Inter Service performance to win this opening round match in the 2015 Inter Services tournament.  They will travel to Aldershot with a side that are able to pose the dominant Army Women some questions.  For the Royal Navy Women it was a hard day at the office but it remains to their credit that having been forced to defend heroically for nearly all the game they still had the strength of character to keep challenging the RAF, which was rewarded with a coupe of late tries. After an opening five minutes where the Royal Navy Women looked sharp and Nikki Elvidge had managed to make a couple of good breaks the RAF Women began t...
