Twenty two year old centre, Sam Davies, continued development as a player of rich promise has been acknowledged with the award of the Royal Navy Rugby Union’s Proud Heritage, Exciting Future Award at the players dinner on Saturday night.  The trophy was specially commissioned and fashioned from original oak and copper from HMS Victory to symbolize the proud traditions and heritage upon which the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines and Navy Rugby are founded.  It is awarded to the player within the Senior XV squad who has ‘made the break-through’ during the season. A sun drenched May Day bank holiday weekend started with the Army Women confirming that in the Services Women’s game they are in a league of their own.  Early set piece dominance and cast iron defence saw tries through turnovers.  However by the end of the first half they were scoring tries that just had to be admired.  The Navy Women with ball in hand looked to take the game to the Army but were under powered at the tackle zone and scrum.  In the end they were simply out numbered in defence. On a well-prepared pitch with an enthusiastic crowd the Mariners took to the pitch at Kneller Hall believing this would be their year. The intelligence reports had the Army Masters worried following their reports from the RAF game and there was a strong team spirit in the training camp. Unfortunately the first half did not go according to the script and in the first 15 minutes the Army Masters slotted two penalties after a number of Mariners transgressions, mostly for offside to make the score 6-0 to the Army. A pulsating first half when staunch Navy defence kept the Army at arms length for most of the time gave high hopes for the second period.
