Evans Faces Tough Leeds Challenge

Whilst Corps colleague Greg Barden is enjoying the sun and the heat of George, South Africa with England Sevens, Navy Rugby’s Gaz Evans faces a tough, cold day, in Yorkshire on Sunday. Gaz has been named at hooker for club side Plymouth Albion as they travel to Leeds to face the league leaders. Gaz’s season continues to be as remarkable, in it’s own way, as the more reported exploits of Greg (Bristol & England Sevens) and Josh Drauniniu (Exeter Chiefs & England Sevens). England Win Plate Final in George

England Sevens recovered from a quarter final loss to South Africa to between first Samoa (19 - 20) and then Portugal (24 - 7) to win the Plate Final in the George leg of the iRB World Sevens Series. South Africa went on to win their home tournament beating New Zealand in the final. They now top the WSS rankings with two wins from two (40 pts) with NEw Zealand second (28 pts) and England joint third alonside Fiji (24 pts). The series now takes a break until 6/7 February where it resumes in Wellington, New Zealand before the fourth leg is held in San Diego, USA on 14/15 February.

Comfortable Win for England Seven

England started their George WSS Sevens campaign with a comfrotable win over Tunisia. Returning world sevens record points scorer, Ben Gollings, scored the first try which he also converted. He also added five further conversions to increase his record tally. England scrum half Micky Young was also on the score sheet with a hatrick of tries, scoring two in the first half and claiming one in the second. Rob Vickerman was the other try scorer in the first half before Greg once again game off the bench to score his second try in England colours and the sixth and final try for England. England Through, Pool Decider to Come

England have progressed through to the trophy competition with a routine victory over the French. They will now face New Zealand in the pool decider. The first half was a strangely low scoring affair. The only points being a Chris Craknell try converted by Ben Gollings. However a try in the first minute of the second half from Ben, followed two minutes later by Micky Young scoring his fourth try of the competition saw England stretch to a 21 - 0 lead, both tries being converted by Ben Gollings. Ben Gollings then saw yellow and was sin binned which allowed France a consolation try at the finish. Final score England 21 France 7. The date Thu 27 - Sat 29 Nov 08 will stick in the minds of the players and staff of HMS Lancaster's Rugby 7's squad not just for a long time but for the rest of there lives. Whilst leaving Portsmouth on 21 Aug 08 Clubz LPT Daz Hoare emailed Jill Conlon in charge of the Dubai 7's to see if they could get a team entered into the Dubai Rugby 7's, the reply was not good it was fully booked and they had a big waiting list.
