Our players live a life less ordinary and there is more to them than just rugby. --- Chief Petty Officer Billi Staite Chief Petty Officer Billi Staite joined the Royal Navy in 2002 as an Air Engineering Technician, providing vital engineering support to the Commando Helicopter Force which saw her deploy to destinations including Afghanistan, USA and Norway. In 2017 she retrained as a Biomedical Scientist and is now one of 17 amongst the entire of defence. In her current role she provides testing and analysis to Defence Medical Services and support to operations as well as the NHS. Commander Arty Shaw, the Senior XV Director of Rugby said, "After 3 fiercely contested trial matches, our journey toward the Inter Services commences in earnest. The squad has had a great week, formally welcomed by the Chair of Navy Rugby on Monday where the honour of their selection was reinforced. As March rolls in the freshly trimmed down Royal Navy Senior Men's Squad headed north from their training camp in Taunton to face a Bristol Bears Select XV. The team were eager to entertain under Friday night lights on a fast synthetic pitch at the home of Dings Crusaders and Bristol Bears Women. In the first few minutes both sides took the opportunity to move the ball around as the conditions with still dry and 9 minutes into the game Bristol struck the first blow. After a 2 year unexpected break rugby has finally returned to HMS Collingwood (CWD) with an excellent start to what remains of the 21/22 season. Training started in February with only a handful of players attending. As the weeks have gone by 30+ keen young men and women have attended, of varying experience levels. Last week saw their first fixture against US Portsmouth 2s who are a very experienced side. Pitch conditions were quite challenging after the back to back recent storms.
