FLEET FLAGSHIP PLAYS HOST TO ROYAL NAVY RUGBY

A buffet reception was held on board the Royal Navy's Fleet Flagship, HMS ARK ROYAL, at the end of January to thank the Royal Navy Rugby Union Sponsors for their continued support to the Game. The event was extremely well attended and saw Rolls Royce, VT, Thales, Flagship, KooGa, Volkswagen - Peter Cooper, Aramark, QinetiQ and Charles Trywitt in attendance. The assembled guests were given a presentation on the programme leading up to the Inter Services fixtures by the Navy’s Director of Rugby, Lt Cdr Geraint Ashton Jones. CS U23 Struggle In Wales

Combined Services U23s, captained by Mne Jonny Stephens (42 Cdo RM) lost out 29 - 0 to Welsh Universities at Cross Keys. Naturally the team were disheartened to record their second loss and again not to get on the score sheet but they should take immense pride with much of their play and in particular their defence. CS U23 Head Coach, CPOPT Steve Sinclair (HMS Drake) was happy to report that a number of the Navy players had again put in strong performances. Richie Ives (HMS Nelson) continues to improve at Tighthead prop whilst at Loosehead Tom Blackburn (HMS Thunderer) is adding far more mobility to his game. Navy Man Sets Sail For England

Navy Rugby's Mr Administrator, Warrant Officer Martyn 'Sid' Cole has received National recognition with an appointment as Assistant Team Manager to the England Counties XV. Sid has served Navy Rugby at all levels and has been Team Manager for the Seniors, Youth and Veterans. Commenting on the appointment Navy Director of Rugby Geraint Ashton Jones said: "I am sure Sid will provide the Counties XV with the level of Service that we have been come accustomed to in Navy Rugby. We are fortunate that we are always able to call on Team Managers of the highest quality and Sid has been no exception. A number of players will be making their season debut when the Royal Navy take on Marine Nationale in Paris on Friday night. Marsh Cormack (845 Sqn) and Justin Doney (814 Sqn) (see photograph) have both recently returned from Operational tours and will make an all Fleet Air Arm pairing in the Second Row. Meanwhile Callum McCrae and Scott Llewyllen (both 42 Cdo RM) will renew their Dubai 7s partnership in the centre having both recently returned from Norway. RFU (W) South Region recorded another victory on Sunday defeating East Region 19 7 at Sutton and Epsom Rugby Club. As reported previously, both RNRU (W) players Vice Captain Sophy Roseaman and Pam Williams were once again present in the RFU (W) South starting line up. The East Regions side had a much larger pack this week and were a bigger side in general. However, both Pam and Sophy raised their games and clearly enjoyed the occasion. Pam turned back the clock and with a strong workman-like performance dominated proceedings in the front row.
