It was a blazing hot day when the Royal Navy Mariners and the Royal Air Force Vultures took to the pitch at Kneller Hall for the 2018 Inter Service clash.  At the end of the 80 minutes it was the Royal Navy side that were victorious, winning 38 - 10. The first points of the match were scored by the RAF who were determined to start the match as they meant to go on.  With pace and aggression they stormed into the Navy half but the Mariners defended well and repelled the Vultures.  The points came from a penalty which was cleanly kicked between the posts by the fly half. The Royal Navy Rugby Union Senior XV travelled to the Twickenham Stoop for the 93rd meeting with the Royal Air Force Union in the Inter Service Rugby Union competition 2018. A close game with the Royal Navy often ahead but ultimately saw an RAF victory of both the game and the overall competition. The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood provided impressive musical support to the ceremonial opening of what would be a close contest on a balmy evening at the Twickenham Stoop. The Royal Navy Rugby Union Women faced an impressive RAF team, playing for the first time at the Twickenham Stoop.  In honour of the occasion a new trophy was named and awarded, the Molly Rose trophy, and after 80 minutes, it was the RAF Women who took it home.  On the hottest day of the year so far, the Royal Navy Rugby Union Women faced the Royal Air Force Women at the Twickenham Stoop playing for the inaugural Molly Rose Trophy. In recent memory the annual competition between the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force has alternated between the establishments of the two Services, HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth when the Royal Navy host and RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire when it is the turn of the Royal Air Force.  However this year, the two Unions decided that, in the 100th anniversary year of the Royal Air Force, it was time to bring the competition to a more prestigious location, to enable the growing number of supporters to be able to attend the match.   So this Friday both the Men’s XV and the Women’s XV will travel to Twickenham to play their Inter Service games at the Stoop.
