ROYAL NAVY PERSONNEL DEVELOP RUGBY COACHING SKILLS

Rugby enthusiasts at HMS Raleigh have taken the opportunity to attend a coaching course delivered by tutors from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to help develop the sport within the Royal Navy. Around 20 personnel attended the two and half day course designed to give the participants practical experience of running a coaching session as well as looking at the safety aspects of the game and welfare of players. The course, taken by RFU Rugby Development Officers, Gavin Williams and John Brookstein, leads to a recognised level one coaching qualification. Royal Navy Rugby Union Referees gathered in Portsmouth to mark the end of a highly successful Season and recognise some of their key achievers. At a dinner attended by over 100 RN referees and guests they heard the RFU President Bob Rogers praise the work done by referees in supporting the grass roots of the game. Commander Roger Baileff was rewarded for his achievements in the Guinness Premiership with both the RN Referee of the Season and the highly coveted Combined Services trophy. THURSDAY AM - Began with a short sharp circuit session led by LPT Helen McClement, with a pleasing level of energy from the squad members. Following breakfast, a skills session was run with minimal contact. PM - Nutrition lecture conducted by Mrs Philippa Gibbs and Helen, concentrating on what the players should be eating both pre and post match. The Squad then presented its players Charter to the TSG. Late afternoon - a contact session was run in conjunction with the NATO Lions players. Feedback from them - surprised by the intensity of the sessions and in particular the intensity of the contacts. Saturday 21st July saw the RN U23s participate in the Salerno stage of the 10th Italian Beach Rugby Championships, taking place on the beach front arena at Salerno against the backdrop of the beautiful Amalfi Coast, writes Lt Phil England. The U23s, currently conducting a training camp in Naples prior to the interservices championship, entered two teams. Two teams were entered; the “NAVY TROJANS” coached by Lt Doc Cox and the “NAVY SPARTANS” coached by LAEM Owen Salmon, with both teams being overseen by head coach CPOCT Dave Guyan. The RN (U23) team have departed for a 6 day training camp in Naples, beginning in earnest their preparation for the forthcoming Inter Services Championship, writes Lt Phil England. Twenty-three members of the squad, along with support staff, will be based at the Carney Park Complex in Naples. The aim of the training camp is to foster team spirit, develop personal and collective skills, and learn how to look after themselves as players to maximise their potential.
