On a clear cool evening in Bar, Montenegro at the impressive Floodlit Stadium Madzarica, a match was played between the Montenegro Presidents XV and HMS Albion RFC. The match was attended by supporters from Montenegro including three members of Parliament, members of the British Embassy to Montenegro and members of HMS Albion’s Ship’s Company. The event was streamed live on Montenegrin TV. It was agreed before KO that the match would be played in 20” quarters with rolling subs to allow all players an opportunity to play. After three and a half years in the Gulf, Indian Ocean and Red Sea, HMS Montrose has finally been relieved and is set to arrive back in the UK for Christmas.  The Ship, which left the UK late in 2018 has been operating from Bahrain since April 2019. Since 2020, Montrose has seized over 16 tonnes of illegal narcotics over the course of 10 raids, denying criminal and terrorist groups at least £80m street value. Last night at Sandy Park, the home of the Exeter Chiefs, the Royal Navy U23’s side embark ed on their final warm up match before their 2022 Inter Services campaign kicks off against the RAF at Havant RFC on 23rd November. It was a final chance to impress against an Exeter Outreach u23’s side made up from talented young players from local rugby clubs. Admiral the Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL retired from the Royal Navy in 2003 and became the Royal Navy Rugby Union’s 40th Life Member.  His appointment was unusual in so much that he was only the 2nd Life Member who was neither capped by the Union nor had held a significant position on the RNRU Executive Committee.  However like Mark Sudden before him, Mike Boyce’s influence on the ongoing progress of rugby in the Royal Navy was significant, often behind the scenes and unheralded, but always insightful because as a leader, he understood the power of sport generally and the values of team sports like rugby especially.
