Naval Air Look to Defend Inverdale Cup

Naval Air Command start the defence of the Inverdale Cup this Wednesday at HMS Heron against Portsmouth Command. Both sides have lost a couple of players to the Combined Services who play the Fire Service the same evening so it will be an ideal opportunity for the youngster to step up and show their qualities. The other match in round one will be held at CTCRM Lympstone where the Royal Marines will host Plymouth Command. The Marines will be looking to avenge last season's narrow defeat in the final to Naval Air Command but as the current World Cup has shown if they take Wednesday's opponents lightly then the risk of an upset is always there. Commenting on the first round Chairman of Portsmouth Command, and new Navy Senior XV Team Manager, WO Don Shaw said: "The Inter Command tournament is a great opportunity for youngsters to shine. All the matches are being watched with a view to Navy Selection and the team for the first match will only be selected from the Command Competition. I know the Navy coaching team are looking for competition in all positions so it is up to the players who think they should be part of the squad to stand up and be counted. Naval Air have again assembled a strong squad and they were worthy winners last season, however the Royals are also strong this year and my own command have some very promising youngsters. I'm sure it is going to be close."
