29 Cdo RA narrowly defeated 30 Cdo RM, 14 – 12, to win the 2014 Royal Navy Rugby Union Unit Sevens, held at Weymouth RFC. The finale was a fitting culmination of a great day of 7s rugby which was dominated by the ‘Commando’ teams although BRNC, Ocean and Trenchant had their moments. Probably the pick of the pool matches was 30 Cdo RM’s game against Commando Logistics Regiment. Gaz Evans led 30 Cdo RM, and had fellow capped players, Nathan Huntley and Silvi Buinimasi alongside him. On the 5 th of July 2104 the RNRU Sharks met for their first competitive tournament of the season. The squad having previously been regenerated to meet the requirement for development within the RNRU had a number of new names and faces, all eager to gain their first experience of playing for the service. On arrival under the direction of Head Coach WO1 Billy May and Asst Coach AB B Buinamasi  the squad members were given a stark introduction to the rigours of life within a sevens team , by conducting a hard 30 min warm up and blow out to get the lungs and hearts going. Played under a bright blue sky in temperatures approaching 30C the Lions took on Sarno RFC at their home ground at the Carney Park faciltiy in Naples Italy. For new readers the Carney Park venue is unique, it being a U.S. Navy recreational park in the bowl of an extinct volcano. The game was a full 80 minute match, with the Lions taking the opportunity to field some new U.S. Navy and Royal Marine (UK) recruits as well as some seasoned French guests. The RNRU is delighted to announce the appointment of the new RN Senior XV Head Coach - CPO Ash Coates.  Ash, a veteran of RN rugby coaching will be looking to establish his coaching team ahead of the Commonwealth Navies Rugby Cup 14, before beginning the annual build up towards the Inter Services Rugby Competition next May.
