RUGBY – NATO LIONS ON RAMPAGE NATO Lions remain on the rampage with a 19 – 5 victory over local Italian team, Cus Napoli. The lions dominated the play during the first three quarters of the game, playing fast and exciting rugby whilst demonstrating their powerful rucking and mauling skills coupled with superb handling and running from the backs. The lions looked unstoppable as Dick Calhaem, NATO Lions centre, opened the scoring with a break-away run giving them their first try. This year marks another first for Navy Rugby with it entering a team into the world-famous Dubai Sevens. Playing in the Overseas Invitational section the team is up against a large number of high quality clubs from around the globe. But the Navy is not there to make up the numbers and the 7s Squad has already played a number of tournaments in the summer series - their greatest success came in winning the slightly differently version played at the Akrotiri 10s Tournament (where they managed to beat the Army!). Following this weeks sucessful match against the Combined Services, Barbarians Honorary Secretary Geoff Windsor-Lewis announced that South African legend Bobby Skinstad is to skipper the Baa Baas team against the RN in Plymouth on 4 April next year. Skinstad, whose face is now a regular sight on Sky's Rugby Club, is delighted to take on this role and will be looking for another good team performance against a Service team. The Royal Navy finally managed to secure some silverware during the close season. After winning the wooden spoon in the 2005 InterService Rugby Championships it was left to the Young Guns to fly the White Ensign in Cyprus at the Akrotiri International Floodlit Tens. Navy 7's Coach Billy May took a relatively young and inexperienced side (average age 21) to Cyprus to develop their rugby skills and sevens game in the 10's arena. The week long competition provided some stiff opposition for the Navy side in the Group and Knockout stages with close encounters involving the RLC Corps side and an RAF Akrotiri side in the semis before finally beating 25 Regt RE in the Final by 19-0.
