Rugby Returns to Collingwood With Two Wins

After a 2 year unexpected break rugby has finally returned to HMS Collingwood with an excellent start to what remains of the 2021/2022 season.

Training started in February with only a handful of players attending. As the weeks have gone by 30+ keen young men and women have attended, of varying experience levels.

Last week saw their first fixture against US Portsmouth 2s who are a very experienced side. Pitch conditions were quite challenging after the back to back recent storms. This was to be a big test and was played as a training game. Once the team had settled some very good flowing rugby and set pieces that had been used in training now were started to be seen. After 60 mins the score was 21-12 to the home side. Due to the rapidly deteriorating pitch it the match was called after 60 mins for player safety.

Fast forward to this week and the next challenge was RAF Odiham at HMS Temeraire on the 4G pitch. 30 plus players available and what can only be described as an amazing vibe amongst the team, some of the ‘dark blue’ players kindly pulled on a ‘light blue’ shirt to enable the game to go ahead. The HMS Collingwood players to their credit who played for Odiham certainly played to the same level of intensity and commitment as if they were in their own playing shirts. Set pieces and calls were actioned from the start and HMS Collingwood stamped their dominancy from the off. Final score and a lot of sore bodies was 50-14.

Try scorers to mention Baillie, Enchcomb, Steinberg with Steinberg converting 80% of the time.

Many thanks to RNRU referees for officiating the games.

Anyone at HMS Collingwood who would like to come and get involved, no matter what experience level or gender, please contact LPT Warrington in the SARC.
