The Royal Navy Rugby Union 2018-2019 season gets underway very shortly, starting with the preparation for Under 23 Inter Service competition which will culminate in November.
The Royal Navy Rugby Union Under 23 team have a very impressive record, having been crowned Inter Service Champions for the past three years.  As you can imagine the team are very keen to retain the title for a fourth successive year.
The Assistant Director of Rugby, Lieutenant Commander Aidan Riley says "Our mission is to win the Inter Service competition and the key to success is to continually identify new players who can be trained and developed as the RNRU players of the future.  We strongly believe that the skills learnt on the rugby pitch such as discipline and teamwork are directly transferable to our service life and will make us all better sailors and marines too."

Aidan is joined in the Training Support Group by some veterans of Navy Rugby.  The new Head Coach for the Under 23s is Chief Petty Officer John Court from RNAS Culdrose.  John has plenty of experience on the pitch but is now determined to spend more time helping develop the junior talent within the RNRU.  John is joined by seasoned coach and team manager, Leading Hand Nathan 'Pony' Moore and former Senior and Mariners player, Lieutenant Andy Vance, both from the Portsmouth area.  To complete the quintet Chief Petty Officer Philip 'Knocker' White assumes the responsibility of team manager.

In order to ensure that they have the best team possible the Royal Navy Rugby Union are holding an open training weekend starting this Friday at Fort Blockhouse at 1500. So if you are aged 22 or younger, are a member of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines or RN or RM Reserves, and want to play rugby then come down to Gosport for the weekend to join in.  For further details please contact U23s@navyrugbyunion.co.uk or call 07809904811.  Sailors and marines attending the training weekend are afforded duty status and duty travel is available so there really is no excuse for not getting involved.  Come along and join the team!
