Todd's Tidings - Exciting Changes and Opportunities for RNRU Community Rugby

Todd's Tidings - Exciting Changes and Opportunities for RNRU Community Rugby in the 25/ 26 Season

As summer leave approaches, the Royal Navy Rugby Union (RNRU) is gearing up for an exciting new season with a host of changes and opportunities for the community game. In a message to the RNRU community, the RNRU Rugby Development Officer, Sweeney Todd has outlined key updates, including the return of Regional 10's tournaments, a revamped Navy Cup format, and new initiatives to support grassroots rugby. Here's what you need to know:

Regional 10's: A Fresh Start
For the first time in several years, the RN will host Regional 10's Tournaments in Plymouth, Portsmouth and Scotland, organised by each Deployable Regional Unit (DRU) with support from the RNRU. These competitions, scheduled for Wednesday, 1 October, aim to reduce the barriers to participation by offering a shorter format, reduced time commitment, and a regional focus.

The hope is that this initiative will encourage more entries, provide an early season focus for coaches and team managers, and help identify players for the Navy Cup. DRUs will release memos with further details, so keep an eye out for updates.

Navy Cup: Back to Basics
Last season's Navy Cup Finals Day was a resounding success, with packed stands at Burnaby Road and two thrilling matches. However, the earlier stages of the competition faced challenges due to the overly flexible merit league format, which resulted in very few matches being played.

In response to feedback, the Navy Cup will revert to a Cup and Plate knockout competition for the 25/ 26 season. Matches will run between October and January, with set "Play By" dates to ensure consistency. While this format may not suit everyone, it aims to strike a balance between operational demands and the appetite for competitive rugby.

A Call for Entries memo has been issued, and entries must be submitted via an MS Form. Units are also asked to submit nil returns if they are not entering, to help the RNRU understand the challenges faced and explore potential solutions.

The Inverdale Challenge is Under Review
The Inverdale Challenge (Inter-Regions) format and dates are still under review. While last year's structure appeared effective on paper, delivery issues during the Geographic Regions Festival and Phase 2 highlighted areas for improvement. A decision on this season's format will be made early, informed by the success of the Regional 10's and Navy Cup feedback.

The RN Academy, the pinnacle of the male community game, is undergoing a leadership refresh with the appointment of a new head coach and team manager. Trial opportunities and fixtures will be announced in the coming weeks, offering players a chance to showcase their skills.

RN Women's Development XV
With a new Assistant Director of Rugby and Head Coach at the helm, the RN Women's Development programme is set to focus on increasing playing and training opportunities. The aim is to create a stronger pathway from grassroots rugby through the Mako 7's summer season ultimately leading to the Senior Women’s XVs, boosting player numbers and internal competition

The Structured Season document, released monthly, serves as a one-stop shop for all rugby activity. It provides a comprehensive overview of fixtures, training opportunities, and events in your area. Rugby representatives and senior PTs will receive this document, ensuring everyone stays informed.

Training Courses: Upskilling the Rugby Community
To support Unit rugby, RDO will be running 2 England Rugby Coaching Awards (Plymouth 14-16 Oct 25 and Portsmouth 16-18 Jun 26) and 2 Level Three Emergency First Aid courses this season. These courses, held in Plymouth (5 Feb 26) and Portsmouth (23 Oct 25), are essential for those looking to coach or provide pitch-side support. Spaces are limited, so interested individuals should get in touch promptly. For more experienced coaches, the RNRU Coaching Conference, in partnership with Coach Centred Ltd is taking place on Wed 24 Sep 25 at Havant RFC, with workshops delivered by expert coaches on a variety of themes. For more info see the separate poster or contact the RDO.

Team Managers' Aide Memoire
A new Team Managers/ Rugby Coordinators Aide Memoire will be distributed ahead of the season. This guide will include everything needed to run rugby at the Unit level, from organising fixtures to registering players on GMS. If you have suggestions for content, contact the RDO.

Value the Volunteer - Recognising Contributions
The RNRU will once again recognise the invaluable contributions of volunteers at the RNRU AGM in November. Nominations are open for individuals who have supported Unit and grassroots rugby. If you know someone deserving of recognition, reach out to RDO or the Volunteers Manager (Cdr Tim Leeder) for guidance on the nomination process.

The RNRU is committed to supporting all forms of rugby, from Allianz Stadium, Twickenham in May to Keyham on a blustery Wednesday in December and everything in between. Whether it's delivering niche training for PT staff and volunteers or assisting with GMS, the RNRU is here to help.

As the 25/ 26 season approaches, the focus is on building momentum, fostering engagement, and ensuring that rugby remains a vibrant part of the RN community. So, as you head off for summer leave, take a moment to reflect on the opportunities ahead and get ready for an exciting season of rugby.

For any questions or support, the RDO (Paul.Todd104@mod.gov.uk) is just an email away. Have a great summer and thank you for your continued support to Navy Rugby!
