Navy Rugby Waves Goodbye to Pascoe

Written by J Campbell-Baldwin

In a seismic event for Navy Rugby, the hugely successful Senior Men's Head Coach, Dave Pascoe, bids farewell to his coaching role, leaving behind a legacy of triumphs and growth within the team. Pascoe's departure has sparked a wave of appreciation and reflection on his tenure, with players and supporters expressing their gratitude for his leadership and dedication to the sport over the years.

Reflecting on his time as head coach, Pascoe shared his proudest moments, "It would have to be both 2023 as my first one as head coach and 2025 holding the Inter Service trophies. 2025 was extra special as there were no draws involved." His pride in these campaigns resonates deeply, highlighting the hard work and commitment that went into achieving such remarkable victories.

Winning two Inter-Service Championships under Pascoe's guidance stands as a monumental achievement for Navy Rugby. When asked about the key ingredients behind these successes, Pascoe remarked, "My focus has always been trying to set the right environment for the players to perform in. This is not an easy task as you have players of all levels, abilities and different backgrounds to cater for." His emphasis on creating a supportive and adaptable environment underscores the teamwork and dedication that propelled the team to victory.

Addressing the challenges faced during his tenure, Pascoe, without pinning down any specifics due to the changeable nature of the Inter Service season, stated, "There are always challenges both on and off the field, and they differ each season." His adaptability in overcoming obstacles, the strength and togetherness of the staff, and his unwavering commitment to the team have been instrumental in shaping Navy Rugby's journey under his leadership.

Describing the culture he sought to instil in the team, Pascoe highlighted the importance of Navy Rugby values, stating, "We currently have a very good culture underpinned by our own set of Navy Rugby values. This culture is a key part of the environment we want it to be learning, challenging, open and honest and most of all enjoyable." His dedication to fostering a positive and growth-oriented atmosphere has left a lasting impact on the players and the team; an atmosphere any successor would be delighted to inherit.

As Pascoe steps away from his coaching role, he imparts valuable advice for his successor and the next generation of Navy players, emphasising the significance of leading with humility, setting high standards, and protecting the team's culture. His words serve as a guiding light for those who will continue the legacy he has built within Navy Rugby.

Looking ahead to the future, Pascoe expressed his excitement for what lies ahead, stating, "I feel I’m leaving the team in the healthiest it's been for a number of years. I’m excited to step back and watch something I’ve not done since 1999." His passion for the game and Navy Rugby shines through as he contemplates his next steps, eager to remain involved in the sport that has been a central part of his life for so many years.

Navy Rugby Director of Rugby, Tom Blackburn said, "I’ve known Dave for a long time and enjoyed playing with him on several occasions; his leadership and dedication have been instrumental in the success of this team. His passion for the sport and commitment to fostering a positive team culture have left an indelible mark on Navy Rugby. We are immensely grateful for his contributions as Head Coach for the Senior Men’s team. It won’t be goodbye in total, as I am confident there is space for Dave to continue to enhance Navy Rugby such that we can continue to benefit from his experience and leadership.”

As Navy Rugby bids farewell to Dave Pascoe, his departure marks the end of an era filled with triumphs, challenges, and unwavering dedication to the team. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide the future of Navy Rugby, leaving behind a lasting imprint on all those who have had the privilege of working alongside him.
