International Experience Inspiring the Next Generation
Written by Karen Marcellino

Supporting recruits through the challenges of initial naval training by day and competing on the rugby field at weekends, HMS Raleigh’s Sam Matavesi continues to balance two demanding roles with characteristic dedication.
Following a memorable summer representing Fiji on the international stage, Leading Hand Sam Matavesi has returned to Cornwall with renewed pride and perspective. The opportunity to pull on the Fiji jersey once again was a career highlight, made even more special by the chance to play in Cardiff and Liverpool, allowing his young family to watch him compete at some of the UK's most iconic venues.
Reflecting on the experience, Sam said, "Playing for Fiji is always an honour. To represent alongside such a close-knit group of players is incredibly special, and having my family there to share those moments made it even better."
The strong sense of camaraderie within the Fiji squad was something that resonated deeply with Sam, drawing clear parallels with his role within the Royal Navy.
Combining Club Rugby with Naval Service
This season, Sam is playing for Camborne RFC, enabling him to continue competing at a high level while maintaining his role as a Divisional Training Instructor in Cornwell VC at HMS Raleigh.
His day job sees him working directly with recruits during one of the most formative periods of their naval careers. Guiding trainees through the demands of Initial Naval Training requires patience, resilience and teamwork, qualities that are equally important on the rugby field.
As a Divisional Training Instructor, Sam supports recruits to develop the confidence, discipline and professional standards needed to succeed in the Royal Navy, helping them realise their potential and complete Initial Naval Training.
Teamwork at the Heart of Success
Whether representing Fiji, running out for Camborne RFC, or mentoring recruits at HMS Raleigh, teamwork remains the common thread throughout Sam's life.
The values that underpin international rugby are reflected daily in the training environment, where recruits learn to work together, support one another and overcome challenges as a team.
Sam explained, "The team spirit you experience in rugby is very similar to what we build in training. Everyone has a role to play, and success comes from supporting those around you and helping each other improve."
For recruits passing through HMS Raleigh, having an internationally recognised sportsman within the training team provides a powerful example of what can be achieved through commitment, hard work and determination.
As Sam embarks on another season with Camborne RFC, while continuing to develop the Royal Navy's future sailors at HMS Raleigh, he remains a shining example of the Navy's ability to support personnel in pursuing excellence both in service and in sport.
