Royal Navy Rugby Union Launches Fast-Paced 7s Grass Roots Initiative
Written by RDO

As the weather improves and rugby pitches firm up, the Royal Navy Rugby Union (RNRU) is shifting gears, turning its attention from the traditional 15-a-side format to the speed, intensity, and excitement of Rugby Sevens.
A staple of the summer rugby calendar, 7s is played on a full pitch with 7 players and is typically played in condensed one or two day tournaments, demanding a dynamic and adaptable skillset from players. While the core principles of the game (run forwards, pass backwards) remain unchanged. The format places a premium on pace, fitness, spatial awareness, and quick decision-making.
In a bid to introduce more players to this thrilling variation and strengthen grassroots participation, the RNRU has successfully delivered a series of 7s training sessions across key naval establishments in the South West and Portsmouth. The initiative was spearheaded by RNRU Rugby Development Officer Sweeney Todd and RNRU 7s Head Coach Petty Officer B Buinimasi.
Coaches and players from the Sharks and Stingrays (RNRU’s representative and development 7s squads) led engaging sessions at RNAS Culdrose, HMS Raleigh, HMNB Devonport, Britannia Royal Naval College, and HMS Collingwood. The programme attracted more than 110 participants, highlighting strong enthusiasm across the naval community.
The sessions were designed to introduce both new and aspiring players to the fundamentals of Sevens rugby. Participants were guided through essential skills such as accurate passing, effective support play, and the ability to “reload” quickly in attack. Training combined focused activities with game-based scenarios, ensuring a balance of technical learning and practical application.
Fast-paced, inclusive, and highly engaging, the sessions showcased the expertise of RNRU’s specialist coaches while also offering a platform to identify emerging talent. Several players impressed during the programme and may now be in contention for selection in the RNRU 7s training camp ahead of this summer’s competitions.
The success of the initiative reflects the RNRU’s ongoing commitment to expanding rugby opportunities within the Royal Navy and fostering a vibrant grassroots environment.
The RNRU extended its gratitude to the hosting establishments for their support, as well as to the volunteer coaches who dedicated their time and expertise. Special thanks go to Lt Cdr George Wheatley, PO B Buinimasi, LA Josh Tora, LET Sam Benzies, and AB Vee Vunakece for their contribution to delivering high-quality sessions.
With momentum building and interest growing, the future of Rugby Sevens in the Royal Navy looks promising.
