The Royal Navy Senior Women faced the University of Portsmouth in challenging weather at Burnaby Road. Leading 24 - 7 at half-time, the match was abandoned due to deteriorating conditions, but the Navy delivered a strong and determined performance during the 40 minutes played.

On a wet and blustery evening, the Royal Navy Senior Women took to Burnaby Road for their second fixture of the season. The match came about following late changes to the original schedule, but the team welcomed the opportunity to test themselves against the University of Portsmouth. Despite heavy rain causing widespread disruption to the pitches across the region, Burnaby Road proved resilient, offering a firm surface beneath a slick, rain-soaked top layer.

With a strong squad of 20 players and several productive training sessions behind them, the Navy Women were well-prepared for the challenge. From the opening kick-off, their intent was clear: play a controlled game, maintain possession, and adapt to the difficult conditions. The slippery ball demanded composure and patience, and the team rose to the occasion.

Both sides adjusted impressively to the adverse weather, producing a competitive and spirited contest. The Navy carried the ball with power, defended with determination, and displayed a high standard of handling despite the challenges posed by the rain. While a few promising phases broke down due to minor errors in contact or ball placement, these moments were seen as opportunities for growth and learning.

The first half was a testament to the commitment of both teams, who embraced the elements and delivered an entertaining display of rugby. The Navy’s efforts were rewarded with four well-earned tries, three of which came from the dynamic second row Elona Bythell, while Holly Cole added another. Conversions were slotted by Moira Douglass and Holly Cole.

Unfortunately, as the weather worsened and the pitch conditions deteriorated, the decision was made to abandon the match at half-time. Despite the premature end, the Navy Women could take great pride in their performance, which demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and adaptability in challenging circumstances.

It was a strong step forward early in the season, and the team will carry the positives from this match into their next challenge.
