There are some excellent deals on the Royal Navy Rugby Union webshop this month.  Now is the time to treat yourself to a RNRU supporters’ shirt; we have the home and away replica shirt for under £30 or if you prefer something a little different – take a look at our Navy Rugby Remembrance shirt.  If you are thinking about getting back on the pitch there is plenty to help you train in style – with ladies’ and men’s T shirts from under £15, and shorts, socks, tracksuit trousers and hoodies too.  For those of you who think it is still a bit too cold we have some gilets and soft-shell jackets, and to keep you really warm in the coldest of weather try the stadium jacket, scarf and trademark beanie hat!

There is something for everyone – dad, mum, children, even babies, and in the Accessories and Gifts section you can find present ideas for all your family and friends.  Of course, you can treat yourself too.  Orders will be dispatched as soon as practicable and before you know it you will be ready for the return to rugby!  The RNRU webshop will close by 31 March 2021.

Like many organisations, the Royal Navy Rugby Union has been severely impacted by the covid-19 pandemic.  Our regular programme of fixtures at both the representative and community levels has been on hold since March last year.  The impact to our finances has also been considerable.  The majority of RNRU income is derived from ticket sales for the annual Army v Navy match at Twickenham, and with no match in 2020 nor 2021, this has meant very limited income for the Union.  We have had to look very closely at all our income and expenditure to ensure we can keep the essential aspects of our charity going.  We have made use of the Government Furlough scheme for some of our paid staff and have also had to restructure our organisation to ensure we have a sustainable model for the future.  Sadly, this has meant making redundant our two community rugby coaches and has forced us to examine how we operate across the whole range of our activities to ensure we can afford to maintain our essential activity in the future.  This means that our longstanding relationship with Sapphire Seven Ltd our marketing and event management partner, will come to an end in April.  We will be very sad to say goodbye to such a capable and proactive partner, with whom we have seen the success of the Army v Navy match at Twickenham grow from the event it was to the sell-out success it has become.  Sapphire Seven Ltd have also run our merchandise sales so with the end of the contract, we will for the foreseeable future, suspend our merchandise sales.  We do intend to sell RNRU branded merchandise again in the future – but in the current climate it is prudent to take a pause so we can focus on the core task of getting people back to playing rugby!

So this is your chance to grab a bargain while you can, and support the Royal Navy Rugby Union, a registered charity, in the process.  All profits will be ploughed back into the RNRU to enable sailors and marines to play rugby both in the UK and around the world.  If restrictions continue to ease, we are planning a return to rugby this summer, with a community 7s competition in June and our Beach Rugby competition in July.  Our representative 7s teams, the Sharks (men) and the Makos (women), are planning on participating in a number of 7s tournaments throughout the summer and may also be joined by the Stingrays (men’s development 7s side).  We hope to run a full season including all our regular fixtures starting in September with the U23 Inter Service competition, the Inverdale Challenge and Navy Cup competitions and then launch the Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s and Men’s Veterans Inter Service competitions in the New Year.

In the meantime, please take a look at the offers in our webshop and make sure you are ready either on or off field for when rugby returns.  Further details about our return to playing rugby will be promulgated on the website and via social media.
