Royal Navy Rugby Union awards presented to the Women's Team Manager and Team Captain
It was the eve of the Army v Navy match last Friday when the RNRU family gathered together to present a number of their achievement awards to recognise the excellent contribution of players and team management. In the presence of England and Bristol flanker, Marlie Packer, Team Manager Jane West and Team Captain Charlotte Fredrickson were both awarded trophies.
Charlotte Fredrickson is fully aware of the heritage of the Roger Sherratt trophy, having previously been the recipient in the 2012/13. Awarded to the player who is deemed to be the most valuable player of the season, her achievements this year speak for themselves. Always known for her strong leadership, both on and off the field, she has been a positive influence on the Women's team, setting an excellent example for others to follow and being a real inspiration to her fellow players. Charlotte has been combining her commitment to Navy Rugby with being part of the Saracens' Ladies team; she also played in the UK Armed Forces Remembrance Match in November and for her County, Hertfordshire.
The Soapy Watson trophy is presented to the team support member who has contributed over and above the call of duty, and was first awarded in 2007 in memory of Warrant Officer Soapy Watson who was renown for being a team player and also for his outstanding administration. This year's recipient, Jane West, is following in Soapy's footsteps and has performed exceptionally as the Team Manager for the Women's team.
Taking on the role as team manager last season, Jane has ably organised the Women's team, ensuring they are all in the right place, at the right time and in the right kit! A former RNRU player herself, representing the Royal Navy at the first Women's Inter Service match, she fully understands how best she can support the team and help them achieve their potential on the pitch. Jane has also been helping to organise a plan to develop Women's Rugby in the Royal Navy. This summer the inaugural RNRU Women's 7s team will take part in tournaments across the South of England and in the Autumn there will be more Women's Community Rugby. Jane's leadership, dedication and positive belief in Women's Rugby have been instrumental in these plans.
