HMS Sultan Beach Rugby Festival
HMS Sultan's standings in the world of RN Rugby took a well-earned boost when a team representing the Establishment were crowned Festival Champions at the RNRU Festival of Rugby.
Held on Weymouth beach, the inaugural RNRU Beach Festival of Rugby saw HMS Sultan compete alongside teams from 42 Cdo, HMNB Clyde, HMS Heron, HMNB Portsmouth, HMS Seahawk and HMS Triumph.
Using a 5-a-side format, with rolling subs, a large crowd of locals and holiday makers were able to enjoy games of 8 minutes duration played across two temporary beach pitches.
After successfully competing in the pool stage players from HMS Sultan went in to the knock out stage in good spirits. Putting in a strong performance throughout, the team were able to push forward to the final and successfully claim a tightly fought 3-2 victory over HMS Seahawk to claim the crown of Festival Champions. HMS Sultan's success on the sand was boosted by the exceptional performance of AET Luke Cooper who received the accolade of player of the tournament.
Sultan's Rugby PT, Leading Physical Trainer Lee Carrie, who accompanied the team throughout the tournament said:
“Coming into the competition we knew that the standard was going to be very high, so to come away from the competition as Festival Champions is a massive achievement. It was a sterling effort by every one of the lads involved. AET Cooper’s performances throughout were outstanding and even WO2 AET Bown (assistant manager), who is now a veteran in the Rugby world, also contributed to the team’s success by achieving a hard-earned Try. If we continue to play like that we should stand a good chance in all competitions this year.”
