Lions of Amaranto

HMS Ocean’s second game of their Mediterranean tour was an evening fixture against The Lions of Amaranto in Livorno. A big turn out welcomed Ocean and prior to kick off both teams sang their respective National Anthems in what was a well organised fixture by both parties.

Again (POAET) Rob Jones had a large selection of players to choose from but was forced into playing himself at hooker. This meant that the injured (NA AH) Tom Scott along with (PO ME) Green was given the task of coaching the team during the game.

The game kicked off and immediately it was evident that both teams were up for a tough battle. Ocean quickly tried to assert themselves in the game by playing the ball through hands, but the damp pitch and greasy ball were making it difficult early on. The Lions were also having trouble holding on to the ball and a manic first 15 minutes ensued, both teams giving up possessions with frequent turnovers and dropped balls.

The Lions capitalized and after a couple of crash balls they managed to free space and exploited it scoring the first try of the game after 20 minutes. The conversion however was missed. This seemed to wake Ocean up a little, a big run by (NA AH) Tom Matanatabu broke the line and quick hands from (AB) Chad Smith to (Army CPL) Joe ‘Happy Feet’ Luavanua who crossed the line. Conversion missed.

The game was evenly balanced and both teams were playing well, (AB WS) Blake Smith found touch from a penalty which gave Ocean the chance to test the Lions defence. The lineout was successful and from it a driving maul set up (AB WS) Chris Macdonald for his first try of the game. This time the conversion was kicked by (LAET) Isaksen. Within a few minutes Ocean again won a penalty and the outcome was the same. Another brilliant lineout caught by the unflappable (Lt Cdr) Ed Adams which set up a big maul and it was Macdonald that again went over with the ball for his second of the game. Conversion missed.

It didn’t take long however for the Lions to hit back. Following huge pressure in Ocean’s twenty two, a grubber kick from the centre, set up the Lions winger for the score. The conversion was successful and the Lions were back in the hunt.

HT- Ocean 17-12 Lions

Ocean again found themselves under pressure early on in the second half and it took a brilliant solo run from the number 10 Blake Smith to increase Ocean’s score and subdue the Lions. Isaksen again kicked the conversion to increase the score.

At this point in the game Ocean had the upper hand with both the lineout and the scrum dominating. This helped the backs to see a lot of ball and when (AB WS) Rob Fletcher steamed through to score, the game looked over. The conversion was again kicked by Isaksen before he made way for a substitution.

The Lions again immediately hit back though, with a try from a driving maul and with the convertion, brought themselves within 12 points of Ocean. They had a good spell and looked to be causing problems but with minutes to go (AB WS) Eldon Meyers scored a superb solo try. This time the conversion was narrowly missed.

Ocean will be very pleased with the result and performance against strong and spirited opposition. Positive notes from the game include a dominating performance from (NA AH) Tom Matanatabu earned him Man of the Match. And there were also impressive displays in the forwards and backs and with strong replacements also making an impact, Ocean will look forward to a 3 week break before playing Dark Horses Rugby Club at the Estadio de Jamor, Lisbon.

Ocean would like to thank The Aramanto Lions for their hospitality and also the supporters from the ship who came to cheer the team on.
