HMS Collingwood v St Albans

St Albans

A sunny September afternoon at Clarence Pier Rugby pitches, Southsea, was the setting for the 1st round of the Royal Navy Rugby Union Navy Cup, as HMS St Albans welcomed HMS Collingwood.

HMS Collingwood, playing only their 2nd competitive fixture this season, were raring to go and looking to bounce back from defeat in last weeks opening league encounter with HMS Nelson.

ST Albans started the brighter and seemed very up for challenge, causing some panic within Collingwood’s back line, however the training establishment stood firm and scored the first try of the match within 5 minutes.

The game continued with the green & blacks taking charge in the pack, allowing Collingwood to notch up a few tries before half time, however St Albans didn’t give up and scored a try in return just before the break.

Second half began with Collingwood looking to score early, with some quick passing and strong drives from the forwards, causing ST Albans to charge in with several high tackles, which in turn forced 1 or 2 yellow cards. Collingwood continued driving on to score few more late tries, the best coming from AB Shaw, who broke through the gap in the ST Albans defence with pace and strength to score 2 tries himself.

St Albans didn’t give up and managed to claw back some points before the final whistle, but couldn’t stop HMS Collingwood progressing to the ¼ finals with a 65-14 victory.
