HMNB Portsmouth V HMS Collingwood
HMS Collingwood had their first game of the season on Wed 17 Sep against a well drilled HMNB Portsmouth Team. HMS COLLINGWOOD has had a challenging start to the season with player numbers quite low due to the training commitment and timings. Once these were altered to better suit the players numbers slowly increased and after only one full training session together the fresh faced COLLINGWOOD side showed plenty of determination, commitment and courage to compete against a mature, well drilled HMNB team.
HMS COLLINGWOOD were struck hard very early on by conceding a try in the first minute and again within 5 minutes. COLLINGWOOD could have quite easily have been defeated from the get go, but the team showed their worth by pulling together and working for each other. As a result, COLLINGWOOD were only 6 points down with 10 minutes to go. But the last throw of the dice didn't pay off and 2 tries against the play made the score line a bit harsher than the reality of the game. The final score finished 43-27.
There were a number of players playing their first game of rugby union and with lots of grass roots Rugby programmed in for this season we are looking forward to seeing the future of Navy Rugby come through and compete at Establishment level in both the Eastern Region League and Navy Cup. A good mix of young blood and older heads in the team, which can only bode well for the future of the team.
HMS Collingwood is currently recruiting for Rugby Players. All standards are welcome. Training is every Tues 1630-1800 meeting at the SARC.
