DSEME Bordon

HMNB Portsmouth still had their loss from last week fresh in their minds and were determined to right some wrongs. As both teams conducted their warm up, HMNB Portsmouth prepared for the start of the task at hand - overcoming a strong fit Army unit. Both teams were pumped and with the kick off imminent, cries from the touchline rang out for each service - “Go Army”; “Go Navy”.

With the whistle blown the match was off. Bordon started strongly, breaking down the far side and setting up the ruck, they used their backs quickly to break down the far side and score within the first 5 minutes! HMNB Portsmouth knew they were in for a hard game and had to step up. Bordon kicked off and HMNB Portsmouth sprung back with vigour, power and pace, scoring right under the posts and converting. HMNB Portsmouth was back on track! From the kick off HMNB Portsmouth was on the attack and could smell blood, taking the game to Bordon and breaking down the rucks and mauls to quickly score again. The tide was turning, but Bordon looked to shore up and worked hard to win the ball, breaking down the play and turning over the ball. Bordon slowly started to make headway towards HMNB Portsmouth’s try line and with the power and speed of the forwards they scored, levering the score to 12 – 12. HMNB Portsmouth gritted their teeth and powered forward using their speed in the backs and cruised home their 3rd try of the night, failing to convert, taking the score to 17 – 12. HMNB Portsmouth thought they had broken the back of Bordon, but Bordon were not going to just turn over and let HMNB Portsmouth walk all over them and with a few minutes of the first left they half broke down the maul, turning the ball over and scoring on the nearside; with the half time whistle sounding the score was even at 17 – 17 with the best of the rugby yet to come.

HMNB Portsmouth and Bordon took their time coming out from the half time team talks. Bordon came out of the traps fast and started to vamp up their game, their fitness clearly starting to show. Using the power of their scrum and the speed of their backs they put in another 5 tries, making the score 17 – 50. HMNB Portsmouth were tired but made one last ditched attempt to score. Breaking down the nearside and setting up a ruck, the ball was played through the backs, crashing down the centre of the pitch. Bordon managed to turn over the ball and smashed it into touch, with the referee checking his watch he blew for full time. HMNB Portsmouth knew they had been worked and felt deflated knowing they could have won the match. Final score 17 – 50.
