HMNB Clyde Beach Rugby Festival
At 0330 on Wed 10 Sep 14, nine members of HMNB Clyde’s Rugby Team set off to travel to Weymouth, Dorset to take part in the inaugural RNRU Beach Rugby Competition. The competition was part of the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) World Cup legacy campaign marking one year until the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup to be held in England.
Hard fought, full contact, bare footed, physically demanding, but fun matches were the order of the day which were played on Weymouth beach in 25m x 20m pitches.
After making the 493 miles journey south, the team were greeted by golden sands, clear blue sky and 22 degrees heat.
At 1130 the competition began with Clyde pitted against HMS Triumph, HMS Seahawk ‘A’ and HMNB Portsmouth in the group stages. First up was Triumph; Clyde got off to a great start establishing a quick lead in the opening minutes. Triumph fought back towards the latter minutes of the first half and were rewarded with a well earned try. In the second half Clyde kicked on, dominating possession and ran out 7 tries to 1 winners.
Next up were Seahawk A boasting a number of Command and RN representative players in their ranks. It took a while for Clyde to find a rhythm against a strong outfit however Seahawk’s class told with the Helston based team running out 6-3 winners.
The last group stage match was against HMNB Portsmouth. With Clyde reeling from the previous match they took the game from the off scoring two quick tries. With legs tiring with each passing minute, HMNB Portsmouth were unable to hold onto the game conceding further tries however were rewarded with a consolation try in the final minute. Clyde’s dominance of the game saw them run out 9-1 winners.
After group stages Clyde were pitted against HMS Seahawk ‘B’ in the Cup competition. Playing downhill in the first half, Clyde quickly got into their stride with some brilliant defence and some fantastic attacking play. This resulted in Clyde taking a 3-0 lead into the break. At the start of the second half Seahawk capitalised on Clyde’s ill discipline and lacklustre play scoring two quick tries. Clyde knew they were in for a battle and rallied back with three further unanswered tries, running out 6-3 winners.
In the semi final, Clyde faced their old foe Seahawk ‘A’. Looking for redemption after the previous defeat Clyde took the game to them going into half time 2-1 leaders. In the second half Seahawk upped their game showing their class scoring 3 unanswered tries to run out 4-2 winners.
HMNB Clyde then enjoyed a well earned cool off in the Weymouth Bay before watching HMS Sultan beat HMS Seahwak ‘A’ in the final.
