NAVY SHARKS GET OFF TO A FLYING START
In their first outing as the 'Navy Sharks' the RN 7's side certainly had added bite to their inaugural performance in the 2006 Dubai Overseas Invitational Competition. Against what was perceived to be the strongest opposition in their Pool they cruised past the Varsity Blues to record a 40:0 win. The opening try was scored by Rob Lloyd after 2 minutes making a sharp break for the line following a penalty which he converted (7:0). On 4 minutes the Sharks secured their ball from a lineout and a flowing move in the backs saw Josh Drauiniu crossing for the second try which Lloyd again converted (14:0). The Sharks continued to press the Blues who could not get out of there own 22, a good scrummage from the Sharks saw Wayne John jink over for their 3rd try with 6 minutes on the clock, Lloyd again converted from out wide to bring the score to 21:0. On the stroke of half time another flowing moving with all the Sharks touching the Ball saw Josh again put on the after burners and show a clean pair of heels to the Blues winger, Lloyd again converted bringing the halftime score to 28:0. Coach Billy May ringed the changes at half time ensuring that 10 of his 12 man squad had the opportunity of playing. The second half started well with the Sharks pressing hard keeping the Blues hemmed into their 22 – Scott Llewellyn made a crucial tackle causing the turnover and Josh went in for his hat trick (33:0). From the restart the Sharks were very confident on the ball and kept possession moving up the pitch – a decisive break by on field Skipper Rhoddri Dicks through the centre and an offload to Jamie Carauana saw him cross the line for the Sharks 7th try which Lloyd converted from out wide (40:0). The Sharks then worked on their defence game and ran the clock down, final Score 40:0 to the Sharks. This was a good team performance with plenty still to work on, no injuries to report and a great spirit throughout.
