Chairman’s Message Well, what an end to the Season - few of us who were at Twickenham 1 May will forget the drama of the final 1 minute and 46 seconds! What a day; I left my voice somewhere in the North Stand and woke up on Sunday, slightly fuzzy, pinching myself to ensure that I hadn't merely dreamt that we had triumphed over the Old Enemy after so many fallow years. Looking slightly further back, this season has been one punctuated by poor weather and numerous cancelled fixtures; and yet it has been a highly successful one for our Society. I am delighted to report that one of our stalwart members, Paul Burton, has been selected by the RFU to join Roger Bailleff on the Elite Panel of Assistant Referees in the Guinness Premiership. This marks the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication by Paul, who was additionally rewarded by being presented with the Jim Lees Trophy as the Combined Services Referee of the Season. To have 2 of our members officiating in the Premiership, another 2 at National League level and one involved in the Women's World Cup is a source of much pride for the RNRURS. During the season, the Society has provided officials for the Army vs RAF Inter Service Championships, the Army Premiership Cup Final, the Army 7s, the Navy 7s, the Inter Command Final, the Navy Cup, the Cyprus 10s and a whole host of Inter Unit matches involving all 3 services. Some of you have been well rewarded with promotion, but all of us should bask in the reflected glory of our collective success in allowing, week in week out, 30 servicemen or women to enjoy a competently officiated game of rugby. My congratulations go to Gaz Fairbairn, our Referee of the Season and Emma Ward, our Best Newcomer. The Society is in fine fettle, both financially and in membership terms. Thanks to our strong relationship with the RNRU and the support of our Sponsors we are set fair to continue to support Navy Rugby from the grassroots to the elite game. Your Committee continue to work hard on your behalf to deliver the Society with the structure and support that you want; your feedback is always welcome in any format, so please keep it coming. Finally I would like to extend all of our thanks to Peter Cunningham, assisted by Jane Pizzii, for organising a fantastic end of Season Dinner onboard HMS WARRIOR. A spectacular setting provided the perfect backdrop to show off in front of the Army and RAF referees who joined us for the evening. The gentle herding of wild cats that Peter achieved in delivering such an event was no mean feat; he delivered a truly memorable night. Enjoy your summer break; roll on the start of season 2010/11! | About Us | |||
| The RNRURS is an integral part of the Royal Navy Rugby Union and also of the Combined Services Rugby Referees. It exists to foster the development of match officials in the Royal Navy and provide them opportunities to develop and realise their full potential. To facilitate this, the RNRURS works closely with the CSRR to ensure that all policy matters are able to be benefited by its members be they sea, shore or overseas based. The RNRURS provides the CSRR Area Secretaries based in Plymouth and Portsmouth and it also provides the administrative support for all service referees based in the South West of England and also Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Though the Navy has referees based elsewhere in the UK they receive appointments through area secretaries provided by either the Army or Royal Air Force. However the RNRURS Training and Development Officer keeps a watching brief over all members to ensure that their development is not neglected. The RNRURS runs a Foundation Course each season. This is the entry level course into refereeing and is sponsored by the Rugby Football Union. The course is run by the RNRURS TDO and is open to all servicemen and indeed civilians. Details of the next course can be obtained by e-mailing the TDO or the Secretary. Potential referees can also apply to join Foundation Courses run by either the Army or the RAF; again details are available from the Secretary or the CSRR Rugby Referee Development Officer. Though most of the match official development work is conducted in conjunction with the CSRR the RNRURS is part of the RNRU Constituent Body. It is in this forum that it advises the RNRU on all refereeing matters. It provides refereeing support to all of the RN representative sides or indeed any club site that may wish to utilise the services of a referee in the training / coaching environment. In conjunction with the RNRU's Rugby Development Officer and Director of Rugby the Society ensures that all coaching courses, all development initiatives and all training for Naval Physical Training Instructors receive a refereeing input. Finally a little bit about who supports the Society? Like most organisations the Society is indebted to a number of people who give that most precious commodity - their time. It is through their efforts that the Society continues to thrive and provide the environment to support refereeing in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The Society is also indebted to the support provided by the RNRU and its committee, the RFU through its refereeing department and of course its sponsor QinetiQ. It is through QinetiQ’s generosity that the Society has the finance to put its ideas and plans into practice. | |||

| Admiral Royds Trophy | |||
| Referee of the Year | |||
| The Admiral Royds Trophy is awarded to the RNRURS Referee of the Year. It was presented to the Society by Lt Cdr G Ashton Jones RN, a former Chairman of the Society as thanks for all the support given over a most memorable refereeing career. It was first presented in 2007 and replaced the previous shield which unfortunately no longer had any more room for winners names. Admiral Royds was a former England international and President of the RFU who had a distinguished refereeing career with the London Society. He wrote the History of the Laws of the Game an original copy of which forms part of the trophy. | |||

| The Royal Navy Rugby Union Referees' Society awards "colours" to their members who represent the RNRU and the Society as either a referee or touch judge at the Senior Army v Royal Air Force Inter Service match. The colours are represented by the RN silver tie defaced with the word "Referee". The year denotes the year that colours were awarded. Unfortunately complete records are not held.
